  Second approach to installing sensor: use separate, adjacent, holes for LED and sensor.  I mounted the IR LED on a par of wires instead of installing it on the board next to the sensor. The bottom of the hole with the IR LED had to be covered with black tape to prevent leakage of light.  Comparison of the two approaches for mounting the sensors and LED.
